Saint Francis Assisi

Thomas of Celano, Rembrance-Desire of a Soul

His Death and What He Did Before

Source Documents [1240-1245] Thomas of Celano "His Death and What He Did Before," chap. 163 in The Remembrance of the Desire of a Soul, reprinted in Francis of Assisi, Early Documents: The Founder (New York, New City Press: 1999; Google Books: Online Library of Free eBooks: Online Preview).

The few days that remained to him before his passing he spent in praise of God, teaching his beloved companions how to praise Christ with him. As best he could, he broke out in this psalm, With my voice I cried to the Lord, With my voice I beseech the Lord. He also invited all creatures to the praise of God, and exhorted them to love by some words [Chronicle of the Creatures] which he had composed earlier. (Founder, 388)
