Diary of John Evelyn

1670-Jun-16

I went with some friends to the Bear Garden, where was cock-fighting, dog-fighting, bear and bull-baiting, it being a famous day for all these butcherly sports, or rather barbarous cruelties...and so all ended with… I most heartily weary of the rude and dirty pastime which I had not seen, I think, in twenty years before.

John Evelyn was at the centre of the intellectual, social, political and ecclesiastical world of his day and his Diary has long been recognised as the most extensive and historically informative record of one of the most momentous periods in English history. (The British Library Board, Online Gallery Feature, "John Evelyn").
